Custom Web Design
Most of the DC Web Designers clients hire us for our exceptional design skills. George Washington University had recently gone through a brand modernization, and the school of engineering needed to update their department website to tie in the new branding requirements and give the site a new look and feel. Using our user-centric design approach, DC Web Designers built a clean, easy to use, website that provided the tools and capabilities to achieve the site goals.
Mobile Ready. Set. Go!
One of the primary goals of the GWU School of Engineering redesign was to create an easy-to-use mobile experience for potential students overseas. We built the George Washington School of Engineering website framework on a Drupal CMS platform, and created a responsive web design (RWD) that works on a wide range of devices, including tablets and smart phones. The responsive web design technique is a cost effective and user friendly solution because it uses a single website rather than two websites (one for mobile devices and the other for desktop computer monitors).
Drupal - Open Source CMS
DC Web Designers built the site using Drupal, a popular open source CMS solution. Since most of the George Washington University websites use Drupal for managing their website content, it only made sense to build the graduate school of Engineering site using the same technologies.
“Using Drupal as the Content Management System was an easy choice. Most of the other departments in the University utilized Drupal, and if we wanted these sites talking nicely to each other, it made the most sense. For instance, we could tie into the other University databases to extend the search engine to the other GW websites.”
- DC Web Designers President, Mark Cyphers
Social media is very important for the higher education institutions. These websites allow the universities to deliver real time information to a global market. DC Web Designers tied in the George Washington University School of Engineering Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube updates to be seen on the homepage in real time.
In addition to the social media functionality, DC Web Designers also framed their Google Calendar events. Using an iFrame, users could toggle through events seen on the George Washington University School of Engineering homepage.
Converting Website Users into Students
DC Web Designers re-worked the application process to make it more intuitive. By utilizing video, web forms, and informative content, school administrators hope to turn more users into future students.
